With approximately 850 miles of coastline, the state of California certainly doesn’t lack for beautiful beaches. Of course, you won’t be able to visit all these beaches when you visit, so if you’ve decided on San Diego as your vacation destination, you can narrow the field somewhat.
5 Amazing San Diego Beaches
There are still a great many beaches in San Diego that are worthy of a visit, but the information below describes the five best beaches in San Diego.
1. Trestles Beach
If you’re a surfer, this will become one of your favorite San Diego beaches, and one of the best beaches to visit in San Diego. It’s a bit of a hike to get there, but the hike is well worth it.
You’ll find tons of overgrown vegetation on Trestles Beach Trail, and there is great bird-watching to be had at San Mateo Creek, adjacent to the Trail. It’s also not as crowded as some of the other best beaches near San Diego, so you can really soak in all the beauty.
2. South Ponto Beach
This beach is actually located in Carlsbad, 30 or so miles north of downtown San Diego. There are all kinds of water activities available here, including swimming, boogie-boarding, volleyball, sunbathing, and surfing. You can watch the surfers or if you’re feeling more active, you can take a long walk along the sandy shoreline.
You can climb the bluff stairway, and from this vantage point, you’ll have a clear view of any whales that happen to be passing through. If you’re feeling adventurous, go across the street and pay a visit to Batiquitos Lagoon.
3. Torrey Pines State Park
On top of the bluff here is situated Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve, which contains miles of fascinating landscape and wildlife to explore. You can enjoy the usual water activities – swimming, sunbathing, snorkeling, boogie-boarding, and beachcombing.
When the tide is low, you’ll be able to explore all kinds of exposed marine life, and your kids will be thrilled by this activity. If you’re a birdwatcher, you’ll love the colorful variety of birds that stop here on their way up or down the coastline.
4. Ocean Beach
Visiting the Ocean Beach pier is one of the things on everyone’s To-Do list here, and you can enjoy watching the waves peacefully roll in, while also appreciating the hypnotic effect of the living ocean.
Downtown Ocean Beach is home to some of the best San Diego beach resorts, and you can even rent beach cottages in San Diego here. If you have a dog, take a stroll over to Dog Beach, and continue walking down the San Diego River Trail.
5. Coronado Beach
There are tons of sand dunes in the area, so you can take the family out and explore some of these if you’re in the mood. The famous Hotel Del Coronado is here, and you should definitely take a walk inside, even if you’re staying somewhere else. At night, you can relax on the beach and watch the airplanes and helicopters flying overhead, for an enjoyable evening activity.
You can of course, go swimming, sunbathing, or boogie-boarding when you’re feeling more active. If you’re in the mood for a walk, you can stroll along the shoreline in a northerly direction to reach the Coronado Dog Beach and the Naval Air Station.
