Best Museums In San Diego

Since San Diego has a rich history of Spanish, Mexican, and American influences, it’s no surprise that there would be a number of fantastic museums in the city where you can witness some really eye-popping displays.

In fact, just north of downtown San Diego, you’ll find Balboa Park, which is home to several of the best museums in San Diego. If you’re a museum buff, you might not find a better city in the country to satisfy your itch to take in the sights offered by these wonderful establishments.

1. San Diego Museum of Art

This is one of the museums contained within Balboa Park, and it is the largest of them all, as well as being one of the best art galleries in San Diego. Inside, you’ll find works by some of the great masters of the past, including El Greco and Goya.

Pieces on display here have come from all over the world, including America, Asia, Europe, and Latin America. You’ll also find exquisite Japanese woodblock artwork, as well as German Expressionist works, and Buddhist sculptures. Other art masters represented here include Bosch, O’Keeffe, Monet, Tamayo, and Canales.

2. USS Midway Museum

At one time, this ship was the largest in the world. There are aircraft aboard which you can explore, and you can even get inside the cockpit and imagine you’re a flying ace from another era.

This aircraft carrier is enormous, so plans on spending a few hours scrambling through all the decks and investigating all the fascinating aspects of a ship that once was home to thousands of sailors.

3. Museum of US

This is something of a San Diego natural history museum, and it’s another one contained within Balboa Park. Inside you’ll be able to take a fascinating journey along the natural evolutionary path of humans, learning about cannibalistic behaviors of the past, or about how beer was made in ancient times.

This is appropriate, given the fact that San Diego is the unofficial brewing capital of the country. Learn about all those things that make people different from each other, as well as all the similarities we possess.

There are many other free museums in San Diego, for instance, the Modern Railroad Museum, the Gaslamp Quarter, and the Heritage Park Victorian Village. But if you only have time for one, this should be the free museum you put on your list.

4. San Diego Natural History Museum

Another Balboa Park museum, this one contains four floors of wild beasts and prehistoric animals we might have once considered monsters. You’ll find mastodon skeletons here, as well as some dinosaur skeletons.

There are also a number of skulls here, representing some of the creatures who once inhabited the area, and some that still do. Some of these include huge pachyderms as well as tiny reptiles from other ages.

This is a great museum for kids because they can indulge their fascination with all those magnificent creatures from the past, and they can get all their questions answered by some of the on-hand experts.
